Local Terms Costa Rica

Payment: We ask that you pay a deposit when you make your booking, and rest of payment locally to the rental station.

 

Payment

The following forms of payment are generally accepted in Costa Rica:

All major credit cards - MasterCard, Visa , Diners, American Express

 

ACCEPTED: MasterCard , Visa ,Diners, American Express

 

NOT ACCEPTED: Laser, Maestro, Debit and Pre-paid cards

 

A valid credit card in the name of the main driver must be presented as guarantee for the rental. Our local car rental partner may reserve an amount of 850 - 1.500 Euro (depending on your selected car group) as guarantee, which will be released after the end of the rental period if no damage/theft has occurred.

In the event that you fail to present a valid credit card or lack of sufficient funds available on the credit card, car rental agent may refuse to release the vehicle. In these instances, no funds paid will be reimbursed.

 

Driver and Licence Requirements

All digital driving licences will be accepted by validation from the car rental agent.

International driving licences (IDP) will be accepted.

All National driving licences in Roman Alphabet will be accepted.

All other National driving licences must be accompanied by a valid International Drivers Permit in Roman Alphabet.

Minimum age 24 years , Maximum age 71 years.

Drivers aged 20-23 or 72-75 will be charged €13,99 per day - paid locally.

Drivers must have held a full licence for a minimum of 1 year.

Drivers must also show their passport or national ID card on collection as additional proof of identity.

 

Car types

Reservations are always confirmed for a given Car Group -not for a specific car model- The car on your voucher represents the vehicle for the class (Group) you have booked. We cannot guarantee a specific make or model. Any specific cars mentioned are simply typical examples of the size, specifications and performance applying to that car group.

 

State/Border Restrictions

Cross border rentals are not allowed.

 

Toll Pass

Toll pass with unlimited usage is provided with an additional charge of 2,99€ per day (max. charge 55,00€).

 

Ferry travel

One-way Rentals

One way rentals are allowed only between Juan Santamaria Intl Airport and Alajuela Office (near Airport) - Free of charge

 

Collection Time

Vehicles will only be held available for up to two hours after the agreed collection time, clients must contact us if they will arrive before or after the registered time on the voucher.

Included in your booking cost:

• Mileage Allowance
  The Vehicle is provided with an unlimited Kilometer / Mileage Allowance.
• Third Party Liability Insurance
  Third party motor liability insurance is provided in accordance with local legislation.

Coverage limits:

Third Party Bodily Injury or death: 90.000,00€

Third Party Property Damage: 90.000,00€

Fuel Policy

Same to Same

Fuel is paid by client and must return the vehicle with the same amount as he collected or the difference will be charged locally.

Fines and Penalties

 

You are responsible for the cost of any parking fines or other penalties incurred whilst the Vehicle is on rent to you. The supplier will pass the relevant charge on to you plus any administrative expenses.

 

Out of Hours Charge

 

Out of hours service is available with an extra charge of 55€ per service.

Hotel deliveries are available with an additional charge of: 20€ per service for hotels in Alajuela, San Jose, 120€ per service for hotels in Jaco, 220€ per service for hotels in Uvita and Limon.

Special Requests

Special Request items are available On Request and if applicable are Subject to Availability and Seasonal Variation, and will be provided by location. Special requests cannot be guaranteed. For most locations a security deposit is generally required.

Baby, Child and Booster Seats are available with an extra charge of 5,00€/day with max charge of 110,00€

Navigation System : 12,00€/day 

Navigation System is available with an extra charge of 12,00€/day with max charge of 170,00€

Additional Drivers:

First additional driver is free of charge. From the second additional driver onwards an additional charge applies of 5,00€/day per driver with max charge of 135,00€. Minimum age restrictions apply.

Insurance

The customer understands that all insurance cover is provided by the company supplying the vehicle for rental and not Autounion car rental. Liability for claims in excess of the insurance cover purchased rests with the hirer of the vehicle. Autounion car rental does not provide insurance cover of any kind in relation to the hire of the vehicle and is not liable for damages incurred in the event of an accident.

Collision Damage Waiver (CDW) with excess amount

Is included in the booking cost and reduces the financial liability up to a maximum of:

1.200€ for groups A,BA, 1.300€ for groups A1,B1,BB, 1.500€ for groups B,H,H1, 1.800€ for groups C,D1,D,IA,J,J1,J2,P, 2.000€ for groups A2,F,K,KA,

2.200€ for groups J2A,J3A,J4,KK,D2,M1A,MD, 2.500€ for groups M1, 3.000€ for group M,PA,N,IB, 4.000€ for group L,

5.000€ for groups JA,NA

CDW does not provide any coverage concerning damages provoked at the underside part of the vehicle, inside part of the vehicle-saloon, wind shields, mirrors and tires. Basic condition is that the damage is not due to infringement of Costa Rica Road Circulation Code. The Accident Statement should always be supplemented so that the insurances’ covers will be in effect. In case of car accident and damages police report is mandatory. Without police report the client takes full responsibility.

In case of accident, the client must contact the police and report the incident immediately, and submit a copy of the police report, the rental agreement to the rental location. CDW protection does not apply beyond the rental date agreed with the pickup location. For details of this insurance, please check with the supplier on collection of the Vehicle

 

Additional Insurances :

FULL DAMAGE WAIVER (FDW)

FDW limits the liability in case of accidents to €0 (Zero) by paying the daily amount of:

€18,00 for car groups A,BA,A1,B1,B,BB,H,H1 €20,00 for car groups A2,C,D1,D,J,J1,  €22,00 for car group K, €28,00 for car groups J2,J2A,J3A,J4,KK,D2,F,MD

€30,00 for car groups IA,M,M1A, €34,00 for car groups M1,P,PA,N,IB,L, €400,00 for car groups JA,NA

WHEELS,UNDERSIDE,GLASS (WUG) :

AutoUnion Car rental provides an optional insurance which covers damages to wheels, tyres, glasses or damages caused to the underside of the car as far as they were not done intentionally or as a result of negligence or oversight. This is available by paying the daily amount of:

€8,00 for car groups A,BA,A1,A2,B1,B,BB,H,H1,C,D1,D,IA,J,J1,J2,K,KA,J2A,J3A,J4,KK,D2,M,M1A,F,MD, €11,00 for car group P,

€15,00 for car groups M1,PA,N,IB,JA,NA,L

Exceptions in CDW, FDW, WUG:

Charges for any of the damages written below will be charged directly to the client, the most important are the following: Antenna, trays, damage to car lock, loss or damage to keys, windshield wipers, interior of the car, spare key and car jack, hubcap, lights, gas cap, damage to upholstery of a car, damages to the roof, damages caused by roof rack and any luggage on it, extreme dirtiness in the car, personal belongings in a rented car, damage due to negligence, fuel errors, damage to child seats and baby seats, lack of electricity because of forgotten turned on electrical devices, loss of car documents, loss of registration plate. The car rental company, in any case, is not obligated to replace a flat tyre or damages in music devices (radio, CD/mp3 player, etc.).

Towing costs are not covered by any insurance.

Autounion car rental will not refund any telephone, taxi or hotel costs.

Autounion car rental or the car rental company will not be held responsible for anyone driving under the influence of alcohol/drugs, causing willful damage, off road driving, driving without care and attention or damages caused by negligence and traffic violations.

The client will accept direct responsibility in respect of such claims.

Any unnoticed accident or damage to the vehicle may be interpreted as negligence. This may result in a charge to the client.

 

Theft Protection (TP)

Is included in CDW. in the case of theft or fire, the client must contact the police and report the incident immediately, and submit a copy of the police report, the rental agreement and the Vehicles keys to the rental location. Responsibility is non-waiverable in case of theft or damages due to a theft attempt (excess apply). Theft protection does not apply beyond the rental date agreed with the pickup location.

Renter’s Obligation:

The vehicle should be used only by the renter or other additional drivers mentioned on the rental agreement. The vehicle is prohibited to be used, for infringement of provisions of the Costa Rica Road Circulation Code, for purposes opposite to the Costa Rica laws, for towing other vehicles, in order to transport heavy objects or baggage.

 

Cancellation policy

24 hours prior to arrival no cancellation fee is required, less than 24 hours a cancellation fee equal to the deposit given at the time of reservation/confirmation is required.
